Summary: With a team link from StickyTape, players, parents, and hockey friends buy Team Packages with tape via the team's own link, and 20% of each package sold goes to the team fund. The team does not stock anything or handle goods or money. The team manager's job is to get the sales started and keep them going. You do this by sharing the link in the right places, explaining the setup at the parent meeting, and reminding people when the tape usually runs out. Here are the steps, ready-made texts to copy, and a plan for the entire season.
Introduction
You have been tasked with raising money for the team fund. Maybe you have sold cakes and toilet paper before and know how much work it is: lists to collect, boxes to hand out, money to chase, and the same neighbors who get asked by three teams in the same week.
With tape, it is different, because the buyers are already in the team. Every player uses up shin guard tape, cloth tape, and grip tape throughout the season. The question is not whether the families should buy tape, but where they buy it. This guide is written for you as a team manager or parent with the task. It is less about why and more about how: how you get started, what you write in the parent group, and how you keep the sales going all season without it becoming a full-time job.
Why tape works so well for team sales
Most things teams sell are bought to support the team. No one would have bought the cakes and calendars otherwise. That is why it feels like begging, and that is why it gets harder with each season.
Tape is a consumable that is bought anyway:
- Shin guards are taped before every practice and game.
- The blade on the stick is re-taped before almost every game.
- The grip on the shaft is replaced when it gets worn.
No one needs to be persuaded. Families just need to shop at a different place than they usually do. When they shop via the team's link, 20% of each Team Package sold goes back to the team fund, for something they would have bought anyway.
This also means that the sales do not end after one campaign. The tape runs out, and the families need to restock.
Here is how you get started – step by step
1. Register the team and get your team link. You do this via the page on earning money for the team fund. There is also a calculator there where you enter the number of players and which packages you think you will sell, and see an estimate of what it could be.
2. Set a goal. Link the sales to something concrete: the cup fee in the spring, new game jerseys, or the end-of-season celebration. A clear goal means that more people shop via the link instead of in a regular store.
3. Present the setup at the parent meeting. Five minutes is enough. Explain that it is not about selling something extra, just about where the family buys the tape. Show the packages and tell them what the goal is.
4. Share the link where the parents already are. The parent group in the chat, the team's page, the communications before the season, and the weekly newsletter. Pin the post at the top of the parent group, so that the link is easy to find when the tape runs out.
5. Recommend the right package. There are four Team Packages:
- Team Package Season corresponds approximately to the consumption of an active player during an entire season. It is the easiest for the family and gives the most to the team fund per player.
- Team Package Pro is suitable for the active player who wants tape and accessories.
- Team Package Standard is a good base with shin guard tape, cloth tape, grip tape, waxed strings, and stick wax.
- Team Package Basic is the simpler option, with just the tape.
6. Let relatives and friends join in. Grandparents who want to support can also shop via the link. A Team Package is an appreciated gift for a hockey player.

Before the season – for the parent group:
Hi everyone! This year we are earning money for the team fund from something we buy anyway: tape. Via the team's link, you can order Team Packages with shin guard tape, cloth tape, and grip tape, and 20% of each package goes to [the team's goal, e.g., the cup in March]. You order and pay yourself and get the package delivered to your mailbox. Team Package Season covers approximately an entire season for an active player. Here is the link: [team link]. Feel free to tell grandparents too!
Reminder in the middle of the season:
Reminder: Is the tape starting to run out? Order via the team's link, so 20% goes to the team fund. So far we have collected [amount] kr for [goal]! Link: [team link]
Before Christmas:
Looking for a Christmas gift for a hockey player? A Team Package via the team's link is both practical and supports the team, because 20% goes to the team fund. [team link]
For the team's page or social media:
Support [team name]! Buy hockey tape via our team link, so 20% of each Team Package goes to the team fund. [team link]
How to keep the sales going all season
The most common mistake is that the link is shared once in August and then forgotten. Add a few reminders to the team's calendar:
- Start of the season (August–September): The main communication and the parent meeting. That is when most people need new tape and restock before the season. Highlight Team Package Season here.
- Before Christmas (November–December): Remind people that a Team Package is a good Christmas gift for the hockey player.
- After New Year (January): The tape that was bought in the fall is starting to run out. Send the reminder.
- Before cups and playoffs: Remind people to restock before the important games.
Show the results. Tell how much you have collected and what it is enough for. When the parents see that the link has paid for half of the cup fee, more will be motivated to use it.
Make it personal. Feel free to have the players themselves talk about the goal at the parent meeting. It engages more than a team manager reading out numbers.
Supplement with a shared supply. If the team wants tape in the equipment room for players who have forgotten their own, or for the team's first aid kit, you can buy in bulk, for example Howies Cloth Tape – Box or Unite Hockey Sports Tape White – Box. The team buys it itself, and it is not included in the kickback.
More about how you start and manage the team fund, with account, treasurer, and rules, is in the guide on how to start a team fund.
Frequently asked questions about selling tape for the team fund
1. How does the team link work?
The team gets its own link to StickyTape. Players, parents, relatives, and hockey friends shop via the link, and on each Team Package sold, 20% goes back to the team fund. The kickback applies to the four selected packages: Team Package Season, Team Package Pro, Team Package Standard, and Team Package Basic. Each family orders and pays themselves directly in the store, and the package is delivered to them. The team does not buy anything in advance, handles no goods, and does not collect any money. The team manager's job is to share the link and remind people about it during the season. Since it is a link and not a campaign with start and end dates, the families can shop when the tape runs out, whether it is in September or February. This means that the sales continue all season as the players use up the tape. Register the team and read more on the page on earning money for the team fund. There is also a calculator there to calculate what it can be for your team.
2. What does the team manager need to do?
Less than with regular team sales, but not nothing. The most important task is to make the link known and remind people at the right times. Start by registering the team and setting a concrete goal for the money, for example the cup fee or new team clothes. Present the setup briefly at the parent meeting and explain that it is about where the family buys the tape, not about selling something extra. Share the link in the parent group, on the team's page, and in the communications, and pin the post so that it is easy to find. Then add a few reminders to the calendar: at the start of the season, before Christmas, after New Year, and before cups. It takes a few minutes each time. Ready-made texts to copy are further up in this guide. What the team manager avoids is what usually takes the most time: collecting order lists, ordering goods, handing out boxes, and chasing payments. Families handle all of that themselves. Feel free to share the responsibility with a parent who takes care of the reminders, then it becomes even easier.
3. How much can our team earn?
It depends on how many players you have, which packages the families choose, and how many relatives and friends also shop via the link. On each Team Package sold, 20% goes to the team fund. At today's prices, Team Package Season for 1,649 kr gives approximately 330 kr per package, and Team Package Pro for 979 kr gives approximately 196 kr. Team Package Standard for 839 kr gives approximately 168 kr, and Team Package Basic for 299 kr gives approximately 60 kr. A team with 20 players where each family buys Team Package Season therefore gets approximately 6,600 kr for the team fund, for tape they would have bought anyway. Relatives and friends who shop increase the sum. Since the sales continue all season, families who buy a smaller package in the fall can buy again when the tape runs out. On the page on earning money for the team fund there is a calculator where you calculate for your own team.
4. Can small teams also earn money?
Yes. Since the kickback is calculated per package sold, the setup works regardless of how large the team is. A smaller team earns less in total, but each package gives the same amount. There is no minimum number and no fixed cost for the team. For small teams, it can be extra valuable to let relatives and friends join in. Grandparents, godparents, and others who want to support can shop via the link, and a Team Package is an appreciated gift for a hockey player. This means that a team with ten players can get in significantly more than ten packages. Another tip for smaller teams is to highlight Team Package Season, because it covers approximately an entire season for an active player and gives the most to the team fund per package. The family also avoids buying in installments. Also remember that you can share the link even when the team does not have a specific goal. The money in the team fund can be saved for the next season's cup or team activity. Read more on the page on earning money for the team fund.
5. When during the season do you sell best?
At the start of the season, in August and September. Then almost everyone needs new tape, the parents are already planning for equipment, and the parent meeting is a natural opportunity to present the setup. It is also when Team Package Season fits best, because it covers approximately an entire season. The sales do not end after the start, however. The tape is used up throughout the season, and there are a few occasions when a reminder has an extra effect. Before Christmas, a Team Package is a good Christmas gift for a hockey player. After New Year, the tape that was bought in the fall starts to run out. Before cups and playoffs, everyone wants new tape for the important games. Add these occasions to the team's calendar already at the beginning of the season, so it is not forgotten. A short reminder in the parent group is enough. Feel free to also tell how much you have collected so far, because it motivates more to use the link the next time the tape runs out.
6. How do we get more families to shop via the link?
Make it easy and make the goal visible. The most common reason families shop elsewhere is that they have forgotten the link when the tape runs out. Therefore, pin the post with the link at the top of the parent group, put it on the team's page, and send short reminders at the right times. Link the sales to something concrete. “20% goes to the cup trip in March” engages more than “support the team fund”. Tell continuously how much you have collected and what it is enough for. When the parents see that it gives results, more will want to join in. Feel free to have the players themselves talk about the goal at the parent meeting. Also explain clearly that it is not about buying something extra, but about buying the tape you already need at a different place. It removes the feeling of being asked to support. Recommend the right package, for example Team Package Season for the one who practices a lot and Team Package Basic for the one who wants a simpler option.
7. Can we combine the team link with our own tape supply?
Yes, and many teams do it. The team link is suitable for what each player needs for themselves: shin guard tape, cloth tape, and grip tape that are used before every practice and game. A shared supply in the equipment room is suitable for the team's own needs, for example tape for players who have forgotten their own, tape for spare sticks, or sports tape for the first aid kit. The team buys the supply itself, and it is not included in the kickback. Then buy in bulk. Howies Cloth Tape – Box covers the club tape, , and Unite Hockey Grip Tape – Box contains 160 rolls of grip tape in six colors. For the first aid kit, there is Unite Hockey Sports Tape White – Box with 32 rolls. Shin guard tape can be delivered continuously as a subscription with Shin Guard Tape PRO (10-pack), so that the supply never runs out. A supply paid for by the team fund, and refilled with the help of the team link, becomes a cycle that keeps itself going.
8. How do we get started?
Register the team via the page on earning money for the team fund. State approximately how many players you are and which packages you think you will sell. The calculator on the page shows an estimate of what it can be for the team fund, and it can be good to bring it to the parent meeting. When the team is registered, you get your team link. How and when the kickback is paid out, you will find out in connection with the registration. Then decide on a goal for the money, for example a cup, team clothes, or the end-of-season celebration, and present the setup to the parents. Use the ready-made texts in this guide when you share the link in the parent group and on the team's page. Finally, add reminders to the team's calendar: at the start of the season, before Christmas, after New Year, and before cups. Then the sales are started and take care of themselves for the most of the season. If you are new to the team fund, the basics, such as account, treasurer, and rules, are in the guide on how to start a team fund.
